What Should The Limits Of Government Be?

One of the greatest skills in life to have as a human being is the art of asking intelligent and challenging questions. One of the most critical questions to ask is what should the limits of government be in any society? The answer to that question has been most contentious.

The True Spectrum Of Government

As a backdrop, we should understand that the true spectrum of government extends from anarchism (no government) on one end to totalitarianism (total authoritarian control) on the other end. Government does not extend from the left to the right, which is the conventional wisdom that informs most thinking today. Moreover, we must remember that there are totalitarian governments both on the right and on the left. The only difference, perhaps, is the color and cut of the uniform; the mindset is the same for both—total power and control over all human action.

One Of The Most Important Questions Every American Should Ask

That brings us back to one of the most important questions that any society should ask itself: What should the limits of government be in a civil and just society? All societies have struggled to answer that question since the birth of civilization. There are those who believe that the State should be the be-all and end-all of all societal action. Put simply, the State is to be regarded as all-powerful and all-competent. On the other side, the capstone belief is that the State is the enemy of a free and just society.

The question in the previous paragraph leads us to a few other questions. Why should we turn over all power to a centralized government? Does anyone really believe that totalitarianism is really the best form of government for any country, even though it relies on force and coercion to govern? Why is centralized power any wiser or more effective than localism or decentralized power?

The Most Powerful Force On The Planet

I would submit that the most powerful force on the planet is human action that is free, as long as no other party is harmed by that action. Free (uncoerced) human action has created more wealth and more abundance than any other force in the history of humanity. So, why would any society choose a form of government that suppresses human action? That is a question we should all ponder.
