The end never justifies the means. Put simply or otherwise, we cannot use evil means to achieve what is purported to be a just end or a just cause. This simple but profound statement has been part of the canon of Western Civilization and western thought for many centuries.

This statement applies to everything in life. There are no exceptions. All of us should use it to guide our actions in everything we do. Governments and politicians should take special note as well. Both ignore this dictum at their peril because if they do they will cause great harm to America. 

We see examples of the-end-justifies-the-means-thinking when we observe the actions of Black Lives Matter and Antifa as they protested the horrific killing of George Lloyd in Minneapolis. These two groups set fires, destroyed property, and harmed innocent bystanders during their protests. Their actions should have been condemned by both sides of the political spectrum. To call these protests peaceful and justified distorts normative behavior and violates the rule of law that applies to all citizens.

As a just, ordered, and free society, we must denounce this pernicious thinking once and for all.
