The Big Six: A Simple Tool for Success

The Big Six is one of the easiest and most effective tools to use to achieve results every day.  In simple terms, it is the daily application of the 80/20 Rule.  Six is not a magical number, it is just a number that most people can deal with on a daily basis.

The Back Story

I was first introduced to the concept of The Big Six when I heard it discussed by Zig Ziglar in one of his audiotape programs during the early 1990s.  Mr. Ziglar related the story about a business consultant who introduced the idea of the Big Six to a private-sector company for use as a simple change initiative to improve operations and the bottom line.

How To Use The Big Six Concept

First, buy a pack of 3″ X 5″ index cards that are lined.  These will easily fit in your shirt pocket or in your purse.

Second, every morning, sit quietly with your cup of coffee or tea and decide what are the six most important actions or things that have to be accomplished that day.  You can also do this prior to going to bed each evening if that is more to your liking.

These tasks can be business decisions, personal matters, important appointments, family events, etc.  They are highest priority items in both your business or personal life for the day.

Third, write these six actions or goals on one of your index cards and date the card.  Write them down in priority order from top to bottom.  The six items constitute your plan of action for the day.

Fourth, at the end of the day, review your results.  Strive to complete the six each day.  Those that are not completed for that day, can be carried over to the next day, if necessary.

Fifth, keep your index cards in a little file box for future reference.  You can review these cards on a periodic basis to track your major achievements throughout the year.

If you follow this practice on a daily basis, seven days a week, the results will be startling.  I can almost guarantee it.
