The Inner Journey of Life Is More Meaningful

The inner journey of life is more meaningful than the outer journey, in my opinion. Most of us begin the latter journey at an early age. Some of my contemporaries in school seemed to have had the keys to success almost from the get-go.

In my case, I was a slow learner and focused too much attention on the outer journey. I only began to understand late in life how essential the inner journey was.

The Outer Journey of Life

Our American culture emphasizes the outer journey with all the accepted benchmarks of success. We begin early in life to gather the material assets of life: from getting a college degree to marrying well to having a successful career in business or a profession to achieving wealth.

The beginning of the inner journey often comes much later in life. I would wager this journey is often triggered by a traumatic life event or a near-death experience or the sudden realization that life is slipping away.

In the final analysis, human beings want to count for something, to leave our mark on the world in some small way, even if we only intuit this at a subconscious level.

The Inner Journey of Life

The inner journey of life is significantly different and more challenging than the outer one.  The former is all about our personal growth and development as a human being.  It is essentially inner-directed because it is about change.

Some individuals begin this journey in their early twenties; they are the fortunate ones.  Many individuals never start the journey at all.  From my perspective, I believe it is a journey that all humans should want to take.

For me, the critical elements are becoming more compassionate and kind and becoming a seeker of truth and wisdom in a world that focuses on appearances and style, not substance.  The inner journey is personal growth without end.

The Call to Action

I encourage everyone to start the inner journey of life as soon as possible.  Don’t procrastinate.  It is too important.
