A Baker’s Dozen: 13 Quotes That Can Change Your Life

I have been a collector of wise quotes and other sayings since my early 20s.  My journals contain hundreds of quotations.

For this post, I have selected a Baker’s Dozen that runs the gamut from just profound to almost perfect.  Of course, no wisdom is perfect in all respects, but some of these quotes come close.

The 13 Quotes

Read them carefully.  Ponder and reflect on what they mean in their essence.  And finally, if they resonate with you, record them in your wisdom journal and put them into practice in your daily life.

“It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”—The Motto of the Christophers

“Live as if you were living already for the second time and as if you had acted the first time as wrongly as you are about to act now.”—Viktor Frankl (Man’s Search for Meaning)

“It isn’t enough to do right things and say right things, you must also think right things before your life can come into harmony.”—Peace Pilgrim (Steps Toward Inner Peace)

“Judging others will avail you nothing and injure you spiritually.  Only if you can inspire others to judge themselves will anything worthwhile have been accomplished.”—Peace Pilgrim (Steps Toward Inner Peace)

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself (herself).”—Leo Tolstoy

“Do not give in to evil but proceed ever more boldly against it.”—Ludwig von Mises (One of the founders and major proponents of the Austrian School of Economics)

“One who knows others is wise.  One who knows himself is enlightened.”—Lao Tzu (Author of the Tao Te Ching)

“There is no try, there is only do.”—Yoda (Star Wars)

“The purpose of life is to be useful, to be responsible, to be honorable, to be compassionate.  It is after all, to matter, to count, to stand for something, to have made some difference that you have lived at all.”—Leo Rosten

“The truth is incontrovertible.  Malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.”—Winston Churchill

“Live life as if yesterday never happened and tomorrow never will.”—Unknown

“Humility is not thinking less of yourself.  It is thinking of yourself less.”—C.S. Lewis

“Take the word of no one and follow where the evidence leads.”—The Motto of the Royal Society of England

A Final Thought

All of us can start our lives over, especially if we are unhappy with the results to date.  Be honest with yourself regarding your life and how you would score it on a scale of one to ten.

As Murray Oxman has written: “You can cancel your past as often as you like.  How?  Simply start over right now.
