What has happened to truth in America? Everywhere I look, the headlines shriek misinformation or disinformation. Inflammatory language has become the default mechanism of choice. The headline states so-and-so slammed or attacked or schooled so-and-so. Yet when you read the column or article or watch the video, that is not the case at all. In most cases, the truth is just the opposite. What has happened to common sense, rational discourse, and reason? I do not think anyone can answer that question.
And why do we see ideas pop up that are patently false? To wit: Masculinity is toxic. Sexuality is a spectrum. White people have white privilege. Men and women are the same—physically, mentally, and in every other way. America is a racist country. These are a few of the false ideas I see propagated. There are many others.
We see these memes or narratives repeated every day in newspapers, on television, and on the Internet. I think to myself, shades of Joseph Goebbels: the use of the big lie is alive and well. These ideas are dangerous and their constant repetition, because they are not true, confuse young people, as well as members of older generations. Moreover, the sheer magnitude of the disinformation can overwhelm the most critical reader. Unless an individual has a strong ethical, philosophical, and moral foundation, he or she can be misled or deceived.
What is going on in America? At 76 years of age, I cannot explain it, despite being an avid reader across many areas of interest, being computer literate, and being social media savvy. I have a blogging website and often read posts on other sites as well. That background and experience do not help me at all in understanding what is taking place.
