Re: WSJ Opinion Piece By Cenk Uygur: “Democrats Should Unify Behind AOC, Not Pelosi.”

Length: 760 Words     Reading Time: 3 Minutes

This opinion piece written by Mr. Cenk Uygur for the Wall Street Journal exemplifies what the First Amendment and the right of free speech are all about.  That written, I still wonder why the Wall Street Journal provided a platform for Mr. Uygur when there other venues more welcoming to his championing of progressive politics.  But no matter, the point is moot, and so let’s review what Mr. Uygur has to say.

He makes four points that I take issue with, among others.  His first point is that Democratic voters were clear in the 2018 Election in that they wanted President Trump impeached.  How Mr. Uygur divines this from what happened in 2018 is beyond my ken?  When we compare the results of 2018 with previous midterm elections, I find that President Trump retained the Senate. Moreover, the seats that were lost in the House by the Republicans were not significantly different from those lost by Mr. Obama in 2010 or Mr. Bush in 2002.

The second point I take issue with is that an “overwhelming majority of Democratic voters are in favor of progressive policies and want to impeach President Trump.”  The adjective, overwhelming, is not easily quantified, so it is hard to challenge that statement.  I believe Mr. Uygur is wrong on both points.

The progressive policies Mr. Uygur favors, among others, are Medicare for All, A Tax on Millionaires, A Path to Citizenship for Illegal Immigrants, More Regulation of Banks, and Government Reduction of Inequality.  I collected these policy statements from the Policy Report Commissioned by the Justice Democrats.  If I failed to mention it, Mr. Uygur is one of the founders of the Justice Democrats.

I would agree with Mr. Uygur that the extreme progressive wing of the Democratic Party supports such progressive policies. I would submit, however, that moderate Democrats and blue-collar Democrats across the country do not line up behind these policies.  Moreover, I do not believe that Mr. Uygur or his Justice Democrats have attempted to conduct a serious cost-benefit analysis for any of these policies. And, they have not thought through the implications of such policies.  As with so many political positions, whether Democrat or Republican, the devil is in the details and so are the financial, social, and economic consequences, which in most cases are unintended and not understood.

The third point of disagreement is Mr. Uygur’s statement the “Democrats have been surrendering to the GOP for as long as I (Mr. Uygur) have been alive.”  I had to smile at this sentence because I would submit that just the opposite is true.  Perhaps Mr. Uygur’s statement is one of transference, or maybe he lives in an alternate universe, of which I have no knowledge or experience.

The last point of disagreement is Mr. Uygur’s statement that President Trump has committed double-digit instances of obstruction of justice. The Mueller Team included ten alleged instances of potential obstruction of justice in Volume II of the Mueller Report.  Team Mueller failed to make a prosecutorial judgment regarding these ten instances, but in Mr. Uygur’s eyes, that is a big “so what.”  Mr. Uygur also makes the point that President Trump is guilty of violating campaign-finance laws. He makes this claim because Mr. Cohen, President Trump’s lawyer at the time, paid hush money to Ms. Stormy Daniels.  These allegations, in my opinion, have little standing.  I make this statement because if there were a substantive “there” there, then the Democrats would have acted expeditiously.

I suspect the Democrats in the House and the Senate are “strategizing” like crazy so that they can do the most damage to President Trump before the 2020 election.  Based on what I have seen so far from Mr. Nadler, Mr. Schiff, Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Schumer, and the New Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse, this challenge may be too much for even their best creative thinking.  I remain underwhelmed by their grandstanding and continuing political theater.

Here is my recommendation for all Democrats in the House and the Senate: Do your homework and real due diligence.  Seek the truth.  Stop politicizing everything.  Grow up and put on your big boy pants or big girl panties.  Do what is right for the country and what is in the best interests of America.  And recognize that Mr. Trump is the elected President of the United States, and Mrs. Clinton lost the election fair and square.  Nothing could be simpler than that guidance and that realization.  Let’s hope they consider the guidance, and they come to grips with the reality of the situation.
