In Life, We Are Either Expanding Or Contracting

In life, we are either expanding or contracting or living or dying. I am heartily in favor of the former in both cases. I recognize these as troubling times. However, the human spirit has overcome much greater obstacles throughout the history of humanity, including far worse pandemics or epidemics.

Life Lessons

Life is precious and is meant to be lived. We cannot live a risk-free life, so do not even try.

There is another life lesson to be learned from this pandemic: Most of us are social beings and require daily interaction with other humans. We are visibly affected or diminished by the lack of social interaction or the touch of another human being. I cannot overstate how stressful and debilitating this lack of contact or social interaction can be for most of us.

I also suggest that we do not get too casual about living. Casualness can be dangerous, but especially during this pandemic shutdown.

Daily Routines

I recommend creating a structured daily routine for yourself. If you have a job to go to each day, then go, but be sensitive to the other human beings you work with. Act responsibly so that harmony is maintained in the workplace.  Avoid fear-mongering at all times.

If you do not have a job to go to because of the lockdown, pretend that you do. Rise and shine each morning early, get dressed as if you are going to work, and then focus your attention for a reasonable number of hours on one or more personal projects.

  • Keep a journal of your daily thoughts, feelings, and actions, for example.
  • Create a to-do list of actions that you need to accomplish around the house and then start doing them.
  • Write one or more letters to family members and friends.
  • Organize your library by topic and create an inventory of your books by author, title, and subject.
  • Prepare a list of life goals for yourself.  Work with your spouse and children to do the same.

The main point here is to add structure to your life to give it substance on a daily basis.

In the final analysis, this too will pass, and America will get better. Americans are a resilient people. Don’t forget that.
