How Do We Grow Our Hearts In These Troubling Times?

How do we grow our hearts in these troubling times? That question is a profound one given the current situation in America.  When I look around, I am starting to see the beginnings of restored community in America and a return of common courtesy towards one another. I sincerely hope that these behaviors are sustained after we return to a reasonable level of normalcy in our country.

America changed dramatically over the last 40 or 50 years, and we seemingly have become less caring, compassionate, and kind to our fellow man (and woman). Why this is, is beyond my understanding.

This novel coronavirus may yet have a net positive effect on our society, even though it has temporarily crippled our economy. I sense the economy will come roaring back because the closure or lockdown was artificial and not economically caused.

I have outlined below some brief thoughts based on my “A New Desiderata for the 21st Century.” We can grow our hearts by extending simple courtesies to everyone we meet during the day and by performing acts of kindness to one and all. By being patient and being willing to help our neighbor. By giving everyone the gift of attention.

Everyone is stressed and needs assurance that everything will return to normal, as it definitely will. Do not be a rumor monger; speak only what you know to be factually correct. Do not engage in gossip, blaming, or complaining. Remain positive and grateful for what we have in our lives. Say good morning and greet everyone you see with a friendly wave.  Keep a smile on your face and in your heart, even if you are wearing a mask.  Grow your heart every day!
