Are You Living In A Universe Of One?

As I look around every day, I see too many people who live in a universe of one. I observe it in how some people drive. In others, who talk loudly in restaurants and show no sensitivity to others around them. And, in still others, who are totally lacking in social awareness regarding what is happening close by. Is someone in need of help? Does someone require assistance?  Are newcomers being included in the conversation?

Too many people have their eyes glued to a smartphone to even notice anything. Technology is wonderful but it does have some unintended, serious consequences. We are losing something of our humanity as we struggle along day after day with our smartphones clutched in our hands.

In my eyes, America is or, more correctly, was a fine blend of individualism and community. Now, I am not sure what America is or what caused the changes that I see. And I do not know if these changes are transitory or permanent. Will good manners, kindness, and community return, or have we lost them forever?

I want back the America in which courtesy and good manners were commonplace and observed by all. So, here is my simple call to action. If you are living in a universe of one, please stop it. Become socially aware and observant. Let’s foster community in our neighborhoods and cities. Let’s bring back common courtesy and respect for everyone. In the final analysis, we are all human beings, first, last, and always.

Remember the motto of the Boy Scouts: Be Prepared. I will expand on that motto. Let’s be prepared to do good, to be kind, and to help whenever possible. We need the mindset of the Good Samaritan today, more than ever.
