A Timely Message For Millennials (Pun Intended)

The Millennial Generation lives in the best of times and the worst of times, as do we all. Yet, millennials are different because they were born in a window of opportunity, unlike any generation before them.  Their generation has before it the ever-expanding world of technology, the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, the world of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, and the increasing possibility and probability for a world of decentralized power and governance.

The Facts of the Back Story

According to the people who record these things, the Millennial Generation was born between 1981 through 1996.  There are now about 72 million millennials in the United States.  The youngest members are 25, soon to be turning 26.  The oldest are 40 and will be turning 41 with the arrival of the new year, 2022.

The Value of Scarcity

Societies have always valued scarce things that were hard to duplicate and took work to create.  Two of those scarce commodities in the past were gold and silver, and now Bitcoin has joined that monetary duo.

However, the scarcest commodity, which everyone possesses, is time.  Time lost is lost forever; time cannot be restored.  Once a day has been experienced and recedes into our past, we cannot recover it.  One of the fortunes of life is that Millennials, regardless of their current age, are time billionaires, a term I have borrowed from my recent readings.

The Time Billionaires

I will assume that the Millennial Generation will have a life expectancy comparable to an earlier generation like the Boomers.  The life expectancy for Millennials will be 80 to 85 years and probably more because of the advances in medicine we continue to see in the 21st Century.  So, the youngest members will live another 55 or 60 years, and the oldest will live 40 to 45 additional years on average.

Because of these life expectancies, the Millennials can be considered time billionaires based on the following.  A 365-day year contains over 31 million seconds.  Regardless of current age, the Millennials have 1.4 billion to 1.9 billion seconds of life remaining.  The best the Boomers can do with a similar life expectancy is to view themselves as time millionaires.  I would wager that the time millionaires in the Boomer Generation would trade most or all their wealth to be a time billionaire once again.  Time is truly the most precious commodity.

The Key Perspective and The Timely Message

The key perspective for the Millennials is that time is on your side.  So my message to them is a simple one:  Do not waste it. Instead, treasure each day as you would a precious gem.  Polish it, savor it, cherish it, and make every second count.
