Three Questions Every American Should Ponder

Three questions every American should ponder, regardless of political persuasion. Let me state the three questions as simply as I can. The first question is: Can America survive as a free nation if we become a one-party country? The second question is: Do you want to live your life as a free human being? Finally, Why does anyone want to control or direct the lives of other human beings?

Perspective

America is a unique country, founded on ideas that have become only broadly accepted in other countries worldwide in the late 20th Century.  The Founding of America was initiated in 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Many of these American ideas and ideals were codified with the U.S. Constitution’s ratification in 1789 and the Bill of Rights in 1791.

I believe America is a role model for freedom for other countries to emulate if they so desire. With the emergence of the People’s Republic of China as a totalitarian power and the shifting global landscape, America’s position as a beacon of freedom for the world is now needed more than ever.

Can America Survive as a Free nation If we Become a one-party country?

My answer is an emphatic no. America requires two or more parties to provide a responsible and rational national political discourse.  If everyone is thinking the same politically, then no one is doing any thinking of real consequence.  Moreover, one-party rule can easily lead to tyranny and totalitarianism.  Consequently, any politician who desires one-party rule in America is an enemy of our country.  It is that simple.

Do You Want to live your life as a free human being?

Freedom is the most important word in the English language, in my opinion.  It is the only rational foundation for a just and ordered society.  Freedom is also required for all societal relationships.  All human beings are free by their very nature.  Freedom cannot be taken away by the government, except by force or coercion.

America is a magnificent blend of individual freedom and community.  I hope we can retain that balance as a nation.  We lose it at our peril.

Why does anyone want to control or direct the lives of other human beings?

I cannot begin to understand why anyone would want to control or direct the lives of other human beings.  For some reason beyond my ken, men and women, with the best of intentions, enter politics because they think they know better and want to improve society with more restrictive laws and an ever more-intrusive, centralized government.  However, these improvements can only be put in place through government coercion or force.  In my opinion, most of these laws go counter to the government’s primary role, which is the protection of life, liberty, and property of its citizens.  Consequently, I champion a strong local government at the state level and a weak central government at the Federal level.  The wisdom of the Founders still applies today, 231 years later.

I will close with a quote from Anders Chydenius, a Finnish cleric who preceded Adam Smith by 11 years.  He once said that “Freedom is the one tiny little word that matters.”  I agree.  I value my personal freedom, above all else.  How about you, dear reader?
