Why Are There Two Different Americas?

Why are there two different Americas? How is it that we have become so divided over so many issues?

We live in confusing times and sometimes it is extremely difficult to understand what is happening to our country. The 2020 Election has demonstrated once again that America is almost evenly divided between a more traditional America and an emerging America that reflects an incoherent vision for the future of our country.

The Traditional America

The traditional America encompasses the rule of law, the value of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the critical importance of personal liberty. This America was traditionally a fine balance between individual freedom and a sense of community.  The American citizens who believe in this America understand that we have a chain of tradition that links back to the Founding and reflects the thinking and wisdom of the Founders.

The Emerging America

The other America we see emerging is one that has no foundation, at least not one that is comprehensible to me. To me, it appears to be a series of ideas and memes based on emotionalized thinking, almost like ordering from the menu at a Chinese restaurant: one from column A and two from column B. Can America and Americans integrate such an approach and still be the America that is a beacon of freedom and the rule of law for other countries to emulate? I believe the answer to that question has to be a resounding no.

The Choice Between The Two Americas

I see the choice between these two Americas though, as one that no longer belongs to my generation (the Silent Generation) or the Baby Boomers.  It rests with the GenXers, the Millennials, and Generation Z.   However, our role as elders in our society is to help them make an informed decision.  Let’s hope they choose wisely and well.
