The Fifth Letter to my Millennials: Learn from the Stoic Philosophers
My dear Misunderstood,
I want to use this letter to introduce you to Stoic philosophy. Two of my favorite Stoics are Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. They both wrote in the first and second century A.D.
I commend both writers to you, and I recommend that you read “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius and “The Enchiridion” by Epictetus. By the way, Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor, and Epictetus was a slave in the early years of his life. Both wrote great works of philosophy from entirely different backgrounds and experiences.
There is much wisdom in their writings that can be readily used today because it is timeless. You will find no better foundation for your life than these two writers.
I want to share with you one essential aspect of Stoic philosophy. The Stoics believed that we have control over only a very small part of our lives. They believed that human beings have only total and absolute control over our minds, our attitude, and our reactions to what happens to us. Everything else is outside our control.
Please understand how important this realization is. It will save you from much anxiety and worry in your life. Accept what happens to you because what happens, happens to all of us. How we respond or react to what happens is up to us as human beings.
The Stoics taught me the importance of having a positive mental attitude, leading a disciplined life, and always focusing on understanding and truth, not just knowledge. I hope you see the wisdom in my counsel.
With great affection,
Old White Beard
