The Nine Laws of Discovery are the legacy of William E. Bailey. I am writing these nine posts (I may write more) regarding the Nine Laws of Discovery as a memorial for the man whose ideas are exemplified by them: William E. Bailey. Let me provide a backstory to add the necessary context.
The Back Story
I first met Bill Bailey in the summer of 2003 when he was a co-host of a spiritual seminar in Bozeman, Montana called “Lessons from the Mountain.” Soon after that seminar, I retired from Aramco in October and went to live in Florence, Italy, for two months to study Renaissance art and the Italian language.
After Florence, I went to Ocean City, New Jersey, to stay with my brother until I could move into my condo in Reno in June 2004. During my months in Ocean City, I reconnected with Bill Bailey, and I decided I would help Bill prepare an expanded version of his little booklet, Laws of Discovery. Bill was genuinely gifted in speaking, but putting words on paper was not his strong suit.
I used this approach in working with Bill to write The Nine Laws of Discovery. We would talk on the phone for an hours or so on almost a daily basis. As we talked, I took copious notes. Using my notes as background, I would write a first draft of the law we had discussed. The next day, I sent this first draft to Bill for his review and comments. I would then prepare a final draft. We followed this same approach for the first five laws of discovery. I wrote the last four laws using my understanding of what I thought Bill meant by that specific law.
As you read the words in these posts, remember the ideas are Bill Bailey’s, the written words are mine. I hope I do justice to Bill’s ideas and his legacy.
The First Law: The Law of First Discovery
Bill called his first law, The Law of Abundance. During those first telephone calls, I suggested we retitle all the laws to make them consistent. I changed his first law to read The Law of First Discovery.
The Law of First Discovery is foundational for the other eight laws. Bill based this law on a realization that he had had in 1974 that everything ever created is already here, we have only to discover it. He was fascinated when he understood that the creation of our universe is a continuing process. Astronomers and cosmologists studying the universe with powerful telescopes are viewing stars and other galaxies being created millions of light-years away. Bill marveled as he looked around and saw what was here.
360-Degree Awareness
Bill believed that awareness of our abundance is critical to the discovery process. He always viewed this abundance from what he termed a 360-degree-perspective, by mentally orbiting our planet, and looking at the world in totality. Bill believed that such a view would allow anyone to appreciate the breadth and depth of existence and the extraordinary complexity and beauty of our world.
If we view our world in this way, we come to truly understand that the laws of nature have always been here. Electricity, all forms of energy, and the wonders of nature have always been here. The atom, the proton, and the quark have always been here. Man has discovered them and named them in his words and in the context of his consciousness, but he has only discovered what was already in existence. Bill believed we can use that discovery process as well. By discovering our gifts, we can create power and confidence in ourselves, our lives, and our future.
God truly creates; man can only discover, invent, build, or manufacture. Moreover, man can only find what he looks for. We must believe that everything is here to be discovered. Bill believed mankind’s discoveries throughout recorded history prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that everything is here waiting to be discovered.
Your Call to Action
Do not take these statements on blind faith, however. Try to understand them fully by proving their truth. Reflect on them by examining them in-depth. You will come to realize we have been blessed with remarkable abundance—both in the majesty and resources of our world, and in our personal gifts of life, consciousness, and free will, each of us has.
We can also enhance the discovery process for ourselves. By becoming aware and being aware, we can prepare ourselves for discovery. The future is called the future because it has not been discovered as yet. But we do not have to wait for someone else to invent our future. We can do it for ourselves. When we recognize our abilities, our gifts, and our uniqueness, we can design the future we want. The past does not control our future unless we allow it to.
The implications for personal growth and development are enormous when we understand the power of the first law. The first law helps us to realize that we do not have to settle for less. It is possible to have more in our lives. All the elements that we need are here in our world. We have only to discover them and use them.
A Takeaway Quote from Willian E. Bailey
“We have everything here that has ever been created. We have only to discover it.”
