A Call to Action for Baby Boomers

My general call to action for Baby Boomers is this: Do not waste your intellectual capital in pursuing trivial matters.  I believe the elder generations, including mine, have a responsibility to our country to use their intellectual capital to the fullest extent.

I think the Baby Boomer generation is in the best possible position to impart wisdom to the younger generations, which include their children and grandchildren.  Let me provide some context for my call to action.

What is Intellectual Capital?

I can describe this concept in my own words.  I define intellectual capital as the knowledge, understanding, and wisdom each of us has gained over our lifetime.  We increase our intellectual capital as we grow older. However, we do not often get the opportunity to use it after we retire, even though many are still able to make a contribution and work effectively in many businesses.  I believe this failure to draw upon the wisdom and judgment of the elders is misguided.  America can use all the help it can get.

Who are the Baby Boomers?

The Baby Boomers constitute that generation whose members were born after World War II, from 1946 to 1964.  If we use those birth years, then the Baby Boomers range in age from 55 to 73.  Many of the Boomers have achieved and accomplished much in their lives.  I would submit that their generation has been a net positive for America even though politically, their judgment and decisions were not always as wise and informed as they might have been.

I believe the Boomers have still much to offer our country.  However, they must become proactive.

In the way of full disclosure, I was born in 1943, so I am a member of the Silent Generation.

What is the Call to Action?

My specific call to action is quite simple.  The Boomers must actively mentor the young men and women in Generation X, Generation Y (the Millennials), and Generation Z.  These young men and women will soon become the leaders of America. Our generations must see to it that these young men and women have the understanding and judgment to deal with the challenges they will face over the next two decades.

This mentoring is the greatest legacy our generations can provide.  We owe our country no less for the blessings it has provided us.
