Worldly wisdom for the week: Establish simple daily rituals for your life.
Stop focusing on what you are against and begin focusing on what you are for. I have come to understand, over the last few years, that negativity of any kind in life can be extremely counter-productive and even destructive. When we focus on negative things, regardless of the context or situation, we can attract more of that negativity into our lives.
Here is the overarching life question that everyone must first seek to answer: “What am I for? This question will lead you to many other questions of importance. What positive things do I want in my life? What is my true purpose in life? What do I want to accomplish in my life? What do I believe in, and why? The list of questions is endless. But the process is excellent because all of us need focus and clarity in our lives.
What I have written above is like doing “spring cleaning” of the mind. Only in this case, the “spring cleaning” is a continuous process.
Too often in life, we gather negative baggage that weighs us down. We gather this from friends and family, from watching the news, and just engaging in chance conversations with people we meet in daily life. Consequently, we must always be on guard against the “spiritual enemies” that we may encounter as we travel our journey.
A Simple Call to Action
Every day, make a conscious effort to start focusing on what you are for and strive to achieve a positive mental attitude. Set up a simple daily ritual in which you resolve to eliminate blaming, complaining, negativity, and gossiping for the day—anchor that practice in a physical action.
My simple ritual is to stand each morning on my deck and ask God to bless the water I am about to drink. I ask God to bless the water and let it purify my body, my mind, my spirit, and all my actions for the day.
