Who Are Your Heroes?

Who are your heroes? The heroes you choose to follow or emulate will be key to the life you lead, and the success you will attract, whether in business or other endeavors. Choose your heroes wisely!

We can have lots of heroes across a wide spectrum—athletes, writers, movie stars, educators, even the bosses we work for. Here are four men and one woman who became my heroes and who have affected me from many different perspectives: my thinking, my writing, and my values.

Richard P. Feynman (1918-1988)

Professor Feynman was a world-class theoretical physicist and a Nobel Laureate in physics. He was considered a great teacher and expositor of physics as a professor at Cal Tech. Also, he worked on the atom bomb project, and he was a member of the Rogers Commission that investigated the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. Professor Feynman was the individual who discovered the cause of that disaster.

Recommend Book: “Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman”

Gilbert K. Chesterton (1874-1936)

I first encountered GKC when I came upon a small book of his Father Brown stories entitled “The Amazing Adventures of Father Brown.” I still have that dog-eared paperback in my library. I treasure it. Not only did GKC write detective stories, but he was a master of all genres, including poetry, Christian apologetics, and philosophy, to mention only three. He was a man for all ages and all seasons. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest writers in the English language.

Recommended Books: “Orthodoxy” and “The Everlasting Man”

Margaret H. Thatcher (1925-2013)

Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. She was a member of the triumvirate who worked together to challenge the Soviet Union and precipitate its eventual collapse. The other members were President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. She championed a conservative revival in Britain and privatizing nationalized industries in Great Britain.

Recommended Book: “Statecraft: Strategies for a Changing World”

Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD)

Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome from 161 to 180 and was also a Stoic philosopher. He is the author of one of the most important books in Western Civilization.

Recommended Book: “Meditations”

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983)

Eric Hoffer was a migrant worker, longshoreman, and author of ten books. His first book, “The True Believer,” written in 1951, is regarded as a classic and is still relevant for today’s America.

Recommended Books: “The True Believer’ and “The Ordeal of Change”

These four men and one woman were voices of value for me and still speak to me across the years.  They understood the human condition and wrote wisely about it.  I can recommend them to you without reservation. Perhaps one or more of them will become a hero for you.
