A Good Night For Trump If It’s Not Over

A Good Night For Trump If It’s Not Over.  This foreboding headline was the title of a recent Wall Street Journal opinion piece written by Peggy Noonan in the October 24/25 issue of that paper.

Ms. Noonan, no friend of President Trump, continues to write from a very myopic view of the president, his personal style, and his accomplishments.  Why she hates him or viscerally dislikes him is difficult to discern.  I surmise she may have gotten crosswise with President Trump over a personal matter sometime in the past.

A Perspective Of Sorts

As I have written in other posts, we must remember that opinion pieces are just that, opinions.  I believe that opinion pieces would be more palatable to the less-informed reader if they were based on facts and experience, not just perceptions.  Perceptions are the least effective of weapons to wield in reasoned discourse.

The Opinion Piece

As in past critiques of Ms. Noonan’s writings, I find the best approach is to quote a sentence or paragraph and then comment on it.  Let’s begin.

Ms. Noonan: “He appears to have lied a great deal.  That will be adjudicated in the coming days.”

Comment/Critique: Ms. Noonan does not provide any examples of such lies, nor does she comment on Mr. Biden’s mendacity, which was clearly evident to all who watched the debate.

Ms. Noonan: “I believe he is not magic and faces a big loss, and from the way he’s acted the week leading up to the debate–flailing about, stirring themeless chaos–so does he.”

Comment/Critique: I do not believe I have seen President Trump flailing about before the debate or “stirring themeless chaos,” which is a meaningless phrase upon its face.  While Mr. Biden was self-isolating in his cellar, President Trump was leading the country, campaigning across America, and pushing forward on several policy issues, including work on a vaccine for the Wuhan Virus.  Clarification Note: I use the term Wuhan Virus because I believe viruses should be named after their origin.  This is also my way of highlighting that the People’s Republic of China should be held accountable for spreading this virus.

Ms. Noonan: “You can, seeing the polls, hypothesize that what you’re seeing at the Trump rallies is a political movement in its death throes.

Comment/Critique: This sentence is the most curious of all.  I wonder how Ms. Noonan would describe a political movement that is surging.  My sense here is that the American people recognize President Trump as the last defense against America’s destruction.

Conclusion

I believe her assessment of President Trump is well off the mark.  However, she is spot-on in her comments regarding Ms. Kamala Harris, Biden’s running mate.  I would have preferred a more complete assessment of the woman who may become president if Biden were elected and is incapacitated for some reason.  Ms. Noonan has not server her readers well regarding the latter.
